New Place to Play – Perrysburg Tennis Center

Hi Everyone,

Toledo Pickleball is excited to announce that the owners of the Perrysburg Tennis Center are interested in providing another indoor venue for Pickleball in our local area.

They are adding four Pickleball courts to their large indoor facility located at 1750 Progress Drive in Perrysburg, Ohio. To get things started they will be offering free play from Monday, Dec 14 through Friday, Dec 18 between 1:00-3:00pm.

If you are interested in playing, please send an email to Bob at bob_fastnacht@yahoo.com

In your email please let them know which day you would like to attend and also and one backup date.  They will only assign you to your backup date if your primary date is full.  They will be limiting participation to 24 players per day.

If any dates don’t fill up, they will allow some players to play on their backup dates as well.  After playing we will ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire.

Please forward this post to others who may be interested in indoor Pickleball at PTC!

See you on the courts!

2015 Toledo Pickleball Glass City Invitational Results

The 2015 Toledo Pickleball Glass City Invitational was hosted once again by the Toledo Pickleball Club near the end of July. Our event expanded from last year’s inaugural size of sixty players over two days to almost 90 players for this Friday through Sunday competition. Unlike last year, we had to battle the elements of a steady rain to start, high heat, two surprise thunderstorms (one w/high late night winds) and oppressive humidity. Despite the challenges, the matches finished all outdoors and all on time, save for the one mixed doubles finals that was rain interrupted on Saturday and finished up on Sunday morning.

Jessica LeMire, USAPA National bronze medalist for the last two years, was our top ladies player as she captured the first place blue glass mug in both the 5.0 Mixed Doubles (with partner Dave Kovanda) and the 5.0 Ladies Doubles (with partner Bobbi Little). Bobbi also took home a second place rock glass award with Duane Hill in the 5.0 Mixed Doubles. Nancy Meyer captured three awards by winning the Ladies Singles and finishing third in the 5.0 Ladies Doubles (with partner Shannon Gallup) and third again in the 5.0 Mixed Doubles (with partner Charlie McKnight). Shannon also captured awards for second in the Ladies Singles and third in the 4.0 Mixed Doubles (with partner Tim Hacker). Anita Epperly finished second in both the 5.0 Ladies Doubles (with partner Mollie Miller) and the 4.0 Mixed Doubles (with partner Brian Yunker), in our only rain interrupted match. Sue Hickey took second in the 4.0 Ladies Doubles (with partner Vicki McGrath) and won the big blue first place glass mug (along with hubby, Bill Hickey) in the 4.0 Mixed Doubles. Pat Galvin captured several awards, including third place in the 3.5 Ladies Doubles (with partner Sandy Tiell and second place in the 3.0 division), second place in the 3.5 Mixed Doubles (with partner Dan Horvath) and third place in the Ladies Singles. Tournament Director, Connie Mierzejewski took third in the 3.0 Ladies Doubles (with partner Robyn Blosh) and second in the 3.0 Mixed Doubles (with partner Steve Poseler). Other local women who fared well in the tourney included: Liz Sepeda & Judy Lambert, who took third place in the 4.0 Ladies Doubles, Ac Miller who won the 3.0 Mixed Doubles (with partner Jerry Groce) and Lisa Yunker, who came in third in this same division (with partner Pete Maxwell). Also, Pat Pastorek took third place honors in the 3.5 Mixed Doubles (with partner Bob Lineen).

On the men’s side, Charlie McKnight won the 4.5 Men’s Doubles (with partner Gary Ball) and also the Men’s Singles. Tim Hacker & Jeff Chantiny won all of their matches on their way to capturing the 4.0 Men’s Doubles honors, with the father-son team of Mike and Brian Yunker coming in third in this same division. Jerry Groce & Rick Potter won the 3.0 Men’s Doubles, while locals David Hamilton & Dan Horvath finished third in the same division. There are several other medalists not mentioned above that are listed in the results below. To see the individual match scores for each division, go to www.PickleBallTournaments.Com and look for our tourney results under “Tournaments”, then “Past Tournaments” and then click on the division you wish to see.

We were very fortunate to have our four tournament shirt sponsors for this year’s event, which included the Rossford Convention and Visitors Bureau, Billy V’s, Richard L. DeVaul Tax Service, Attorneys Heban, Sommer & Murphree. Several businesses and individuals donated prizes for our raffles, including the Boilermakers Local 85. The players also enjoyed a sample of the “Sweet Hots” from our local, famous Tony Packo’s.

Tournament director Connie Mierzejewski and her assistant Charlie McKnight worked hard to prepare for this second annual event. USAPA Tournament Schedule, Results & Points liaison, Marilyn Holiday, handled the court assignments and tourney results desk for the entire three day weekend. BCSN recorded a few of our matches on Sunday morning and Connie provided the color commentary. Many others contributed their time and efforts to make this event a success and we certainly appreciate it very much.

All in all, it was an excellent second time event and it will only get better in the years to come. We look forward to next year’s event, with perhaps even more players from our local area and from out of town.

Belmont Country Club Pickleball Demo Saturday, March 28, 2015

Belmont Pickleball Demo Attendees

Fun group of Belmont and Toledo Pickleball players!

A good crowd of approximately sixteen people attended the first Belmont Country Club Pickleball Demo this Saturday morning. Ron and Peg Hanna organized a group of tennis players who had just started playing pickleball and Connie Mierzejewski set up the demo with them. Marsha Koch ran the demo, as she, Connie, Jess LeMire and Charlie McKnight played a few points for the group and then mixed in the new pickleball players. Two tennis courts were used and marked off with the pickleball lines, plus the nets were lowered a couple of inches to pickleball height. By the end of our session, there were lots of smiles and a little yelling and teasing going on, as the Belmont players had some very spirited games. They plan to have regular playing times for those that want to play (and try) pickleball at Belmont from now on. A few of the players may even visit the Rossford courts when the weather warms up (hurry up please).

Jess and Ron Hanna

Ron and Peg provided a healthy snack and dessert for all of the players and the Rossford demo crew, plus the Belmont group made a nice monetary donation to the Toledo Pickleball Club. It is safe to say that everyone had a good time and it was very cool to see the seeds of more pickleball growth locally. Job well done all!!!

2014 Pickleball Nationals VI – Jessica LeMire Reporting

With its mountainous views, crystal clear blue skies, 80 something degree temperatures, prickly 2014 Nationalscactus, and golf cart infested roads, the city of Buckeye, Arizona welcomed a record number of 730 participants, ages 8 to 80+ from all over the U.S. and beyond, to compete at the sixth annual USAPA National Pickleball Tournament. A total of 28 lighted courts at the Del Webb community of Sun City Festival accommodated more than 2000 matches over eight days of competition, which began at 8 a.m. and ended well into the evenings on most nights with one day finishing as late as 10 p.m. This year’s tournament was the largest in the history of the sport!

The atmosphere at the tournament buzzed with action and excitement. Vendors sold every kind of pickleball paddle, apparel, and bling imaginable, fans scurried from court to court cheering on their Camp Hack 2014favorite players, and pickleball legends could be seen battling one another on the courts. Nationals is a place where one feels at home chatting with fellow ballers about strategy, paddles, tournament brackets, and partner match-ups. Needless to say, this tourney is unlike any other one around.

This year’s trip kicked off a couple days before the actual tournament began. Marsha and I arrived in Hilary & Alice 2014Arizona on Halloween day, and that evening we went to the public courts to practice. There, the local pickleballers threw a costume party where players came dressed up as bumblebees, ladybugs, hippies, crayons, and pirates. Believe it or not it is difficult to play seriously against a Star Trek Spock monkey!

Jess Cindy & VonnieA special memory of this year’s tournament for me was having my parents and two aunts there cheering me on. My parents have been a strong support system at the local tourneys, but this was their first time out to the Nationals. Having two of my biggest fans there for me at this type of arena was unforgettable.

Several individuals represented Ohio and Michigan this year including: Corrine Carr (East Lansing, MI), Alice Dodgson (Norton Shores, MI), Yvonne Hackenberg (Kalamazoo, MI), Ronald Hohman (Oscoda, MI), Laura Fenton Kovanda (Columbus, OH), Dave Kovanda (Columbus, OH), Jessica LeMire (Grand Rapids, MI), Daniel McLaughlin (Portage, MI), and Will Willson (Commerce Township, MI)—Marsha Koch and Al Hager represented Toledo Pickleball.

Here is a recap of the results:

Yvonne Hackenberg – Gold, Women’s Doubles 60+ (with Hilary Marold); Bronze, Mixed Doubles 65+ (with Daniel McLaughlin)

Al Hager – Gold, Men’s Doubles 60+ (with Pat Kane)

Ronald Hohman – Bronze, Mixed Doubles 70+ (with Alice Tym); Bronze, Men’s Singles 70+

Laura Fenton Kovanda– Silver, Women’s Doubles 19+ (with Julie Haney)

Dave Kovanda – Silver, Men’s Singles 65+

Marsha Koch – Gold, Women’s Doubles 19+ (with Jessica LeMire); Bronze, Open Women’s Doubles (with Jessica LeMire)

Jessica LeMire – Gold, Women’s Doubles 19+ (with Marsha Koch); Bronze, Open Women’s Doubles (with Marsha Koch); Bronze, Mixed Doubles 19+ (with Brian Staub)

Daniel McLaughlin – Bronze, Mixed Doubles 65+ (with Yvonne Hackenberg)

William Willson – Bronze, Open Men’s Singles

Congratulations to these Mid-Westerners!

Now begins the countdown until the 2015 USAPA Nationals VII!
