Hello Toledo Picklers
Happy & Healthy New Year wishes to you all!
As the new year starts, I am sure many of you are thinking and preparing for this year’s many Pickleball tournaments. Each year it seems like there are more and more tournaments and thankfully for us, there are many in the local MI/OH area.
I wanted to send out a note on one that I think is going to be top-notch. “Pickleball Fever in the Zoo” will be held in Kalamazoo MI over the Memorial Day weekend. This tournament is a memorial tournament to honor the late Bob Northrop who was instrumental in growing the sport in the Kalamazoo area and who was also responsible for introducing Jim and Yvonne Hackenberg to the game. Jim and Yvonne will be the directors for this tournament and are really putting a lot of effort into making this an outstanding tournament and one that you won’t want to miss.
Here are two links with all the information as well as registration
This is a double elimination skill level tournament with events for Mixed Doubles, Men’s Doubles and Women’s Doubles. There will be limited space so please consider registering early. The trip over to Kzoo is an easy two-hour drive from the Toledo area.
Looking forward to seeing you all on the courts soon!
A PICKLEBALL SUPER BOWL COMMERCIAL!!!! As some of you may already know, there is a contest taking place right now for a small business to have a spot for a commercial during the 2014 Super Bowl-all it takes is a LOT of votes. Pickleball Central is in the running. Pickleball Central is family owned and operated. They are very generous to local tournaments, many of you that competed at the Royal Oak tournament received a nice orange back pack from them. Please read the message from Anna Copley from PC and vote for them. You can vote everyday and to win they will need us to do that! How cool would it be to have a Pickleball commercial during the Super Bowl!!!!
Thank you for your support in the SmallBusinessBigGame.com contest.
In order to succeed we need lots of Pickleball People to vote daily. We are confident we’ll make it to Round Two. Making it to Round Three will be a challenge but we think, with our passionate Pickleball community, we can win this. The winner gets featured in a professional commercial during the Super Bowl. 111 MILLION people watched the Super Bowl last year. Winning this contest puts pickleball in front of the world. We think this kind of exposure would take a big step forward in putting Pickleball courts in every town and every nation and eventually winning this contest will help out Pickleball in the Olympics.
Here’s a link to our entry in the contest https://www.smallbusinessbiggame.com/wa/PickleballCentralcom/383529
Please encourage people to sign up for the Daily Email Reminder email. After the contest people will not receive a daily email from us! It’s only while we’re still in the running that the daily email will go out. To sign up for the reminders, they just need to email me or call us and ask to be on the contact list.
Thank you again! This is so exciting!

Mentor Ohio Recreation Department will be hosting its first ever Pickleball Tournament. Al Hager was instrumental in helping the Mentor leadership with all aspects of their court conversion. They have 6 fabulous courts that are laid out exactly the same as our Toledo complex, the only thing that added was lights! I recently played on these courts and they are really nice.
This will be a skill level tournament and I hope that some of our Toledo players might want to support their efforts. Mentor, OH is an easy 2 hour and 15 minute ride from the Toledo area. The tournament will be held Saturday and Sunday, September 7 & 8. Here is the link for all the tournament details http://cityofmentor.com/wp-content/uploads/pickle-ball-tournament.pdf
Please note that the way to register for the tournament is to call the City of Mentor at 440-974-5720. Deadline for registration is August 30.
Additionally, if you have any questions, please call the Tournament Director Brian Murphy at 440-221-7487.
We’re having a party and you’re invited! Toledo Pickleball is having our second annual cookout, which we run like a potluck for teetotalers–there will be no alcohol as our courts are still owned by the Rossford Board of Education.
Where: Rossford Pickleball Courts, 313 Glenwood Avenue, Rossford OH
When: Sunday, August 4, 2013
What to bring: Please bring your non-alcoholic beverages, a side dish or dessert to pass, and a few paper plates and napkins. Toledo Pickleball will be providing hot dogs, buns, and condiments. Also, please remember to bring a chair and whatever shade apparatus you need–our shelter is still in the planning stage.
After we eat and visit a bit, we’ll play some Pickleball!
We’re looking forward to having everyone together and then playing until the last foursome quits or it’s just too dark. And we’re hoping that some of the people we’ve been missing will show up.
All attendees should feel free to bring a friend to introduce them to this great game.
See you on the courts!
Come and join us for the grand opening of the Pickleball Courts in the Village of Holland. Mayor Mike Yunker, in coordination with Courtsmiths, has built a beautiful three-court facility in Strawberry Acres Park located at 1035 Clarion Ave. Holland, Oh 43528. The festivities will begin Saturday, July 27 at 10:00 am. If you would like to invite a friend please forward on this flyer: Village of Holland Pickleball Courts Grand Opening
Players from our Toledo Pickleball Club will be on hand to instruct and demonstrate the game. We will also have paddles and balls on sale for those who might be interested. I am excited about this great opportunity for our club to grow the sport of Pickleball in the Greater Toledo Area. We are grateful to Mike and his leadership in this project and look forward to the addition of many new players.
See you on the court!
