2012 Meijer Michigan State Games – Toledo Players Bring Home the Hardware

The 2012 Meijer Michigan State Games were held in Grand Rapids, Michigan, this past weekend.  An annual event, it includes approximately 30 sports with more than 5,000 athletes participating.  Pickleball took place in a beautiful new field house with 15 courts.  Seven Toledo players competed in the tournament that was organized mostly according to age–the 5.0 skill level was a category in men’s doubles and mixed doubles only.  Team Toledo did very well!
Medals for Toledo participants:
Joanne Tressler,  gold, 65-70 women’s doubles (partner Alice Tym); silver, 70-74 mixed doubles (partner Ken Peacock)
Al Hager, bronze, 5.0 men’s doubles (parnter Mark Stemerman), silver 5.0 mixed doubles (partner Martha Wasserman)
Susan Wiartalla, gold, 19-49 women’s doubles (partner Marsha Koch); silver, 19-49 mixed doubles (partner Rich Bauer)
Marsha Koch, gold, 19-49 women’s doubles (partner Susan Wiartalla); gold, 19-49 mixed doubles (partner Renard Kolasa)
Judy Lambert and Vicki McGrath cleverly combined the weekend with a visit to friends located very near the courts and reported that spectating was lots of fun.   Lana Wells also joined the group by making the “road trip” with her dad.  A big thanks to Judy, Vicki and Lana!  It was great to have friendly faces in the stands cheering us on! I hope more of you will consider entering the tournament next year.
Please also consider participating in the next local skill level tournament, which will take place in Royal Oak, Michigan, August 24-26.  Following is the link if you would like more information http://usapa.org/tournamentnews/results/2012_08_24ROak.pdf

Congratulations and thanks to everyone that participated in the 2012 Meijer Michigan State Games!

See you on the courts!

Marsha
